Conclusions

Imagen
- From the results, it is concluded that block programming and other types of strategies are important for the development of computational thinking. - It is important to develop good computational thinking at an early age because it influences the mathematical logic dimension, so it could be a good strategy to incorporate basic programming concepts in the curriculum of educational institutions.  - We consider that if at some point this project is to be continued, it should be done the following year with the same children since, according to the words of the educator, the course will continue in the month of January, in addition to those studies to see the progress in order to make a study plan that could be implemented in the classroom.

Findings

Imagen
We had the opportunity to see a class robotics course for children led by Professor Oscar Meneses and four tenth-grade students. We could see that there were about 20 children who were enthusiastic when the teacher told them that they had the company of two eleventh grade students.  The children told us the time we receive virtual classes they use the code.org platform where they learned to use and create variables in addition to the fact that they found it simple and playful. They also said that they learned to program to play rock, paper, scissors, made step counters, circuits, and learned the laws of robotics and its basic concepts.   Regarding their opinion of the educator, they were grateful because he explained playfully and interactively how to program in a different way than other teachers. At the end of the class, Oscar announced that it would be the last class of the course; he asked what they wanted to do for next year. Here there was sadness but at the s...

Methodological design

Imagen
The present research is based on the quantitative approach; children from 9 to 10 years old will be randomly selected to analyze the progress of their computational thinking after acquiring basic learning of block programming applying techniques such as focus groups, surveys, etc. Trying to define this type of study it is found that:  "The quantitative methodology is a set of techniques used to study the variables of interest of a given population" (Hueso & Cascant, 2012, p. 3) In such a way the importance of statistics as a means of obtaining findings in this research is highlighted.  It is desired to carry out the observation through a small course where guided classes will be provided through the code.org platform and the meet platform; these classes will be taught by teachers of the educational institution José Miguel de Restrepo y Puerta to which the students belong, with a duration of one to two hours, these tutorials will use a mainly practical methodology to ...

Conceptual framework

Imagen
Computational thinking refers to the ability of an individual to solve problems by making use of knowledge in computer science and critical thinking, which means that:  "it is a complex "high-level" competence related to a specific conceptualization model of human beings that develops ideas and linked to abstract-mathematical and pragmatic-engineering thinking that applied in multiple aspects of our daily life" (Berrocoso, Sanchez, & Arroyo, 2015)  Computational thinking is not only developed through ICTs, "Computational thinking can be developed without using computers (paper and pencil are enough)". The incorporation of computational thinking in the classroom is part of a gamification process; "Gamification is a method to create a meaningful and motivating experience through the integration of game mechanics in non-game environments and applications." (Lopez & Gutierrez, 2016) "In his study on video game-based learning, he establi...

Objectives

Imagen
General objective:   To analyze the impact on the development of computational thinking in children after acquiring basic programming skills.  Specific objectives:  - Identify the development of computational thinking through block programming.  - To plan strategies based on programming to strengthen computational thinking in children.

Abstract

Imagen
This research has a mixed approach, its purpose is to know the state in which is the computational thinking of children 9 to 10 years of the educational institution Jose Miguel de Restrepo y Puerta. This school population will be chosen randomly and the progress of their computational thinking will be analyzed after a non-intensive course where they will be taught to program in blocks in the scratch and code.org platform.  The correct development of computational thinking at an early age allows them to acquire skills for social interactions as well as better performance in the area of mathematics. However, most educational establishments do not have the necessary basis to develop it properly.
